Learn about sustainable recreation at Wycliffe Complex
Open House announced to share ongoing recreation management planning Process Cranbrook
The partners of the Wycliffe Conservation Complex (WCC) are pleased to share progress on the development of a new Recreation Management Plan, and associated Interpretive signage, which is being designed to support responsible recreation while maintaining the Complex’s primary focus on biodiversity and habitat conservation.
The Wycliffe Conservation Complex is a connected series of 23 parcels of land – some purchased, some donated, and others Crown land – managed collaboratively for conservation purposes. Situated between Kimberley and Cranbrook in the “Butte” area, the Complex spans over 1,110 hectares (2,740 acres) of native grasslands, open forests, and riparian zones that support sensitive, rare, and at-risk species and ecosystems.
The new Recreation Management Plan builds on the foundation of the 2020 Management Plan and introduces a zoning-based approach to guide recreation access while protecting ecologically significant areas.
To share the planning process, the WCC partners will host a Community Open House to:
- Learn about the Recreation Management Plan and any anticipated recreational changes;
- Understand how sustainable recreation practices will support conservation goals;
- Meet the project team and ask questions;
- Share feedback and explore stewardship opportunities.
Recreation Plan Highlights
Sustainable Trail Network
Trail rerouting is being considered in areas with unstable terrain or sensitive habitats. New wayfinding signage is anticipated in Fall 2025, and the Plan includes monitoring tools such as trail counters and visitor surveys.
Activity Guidelines
To minimize disturbance to wildlife and habitats, dogs will be required to be on-leash. Motorized vehicle access will continue to be restricted with fencing and gates. Mountain biking will be monitored in certain areas and may be adjusted based on environmental impacts.
Community Collaboration
Local governments, tourism organizations, and both community and recreation groups are encouraged to support the plan through education, outreach, and stewardship.
