Mainroad provides regional highways update

Now that the snow has stopped falling, Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting has issued an update on the conditions of regional highways and roads.

Cranbrook & Kimberley

The area saw roughly 30 cm of snow throughout the day on Friday.  While our night shifts were clearing highways, heavy snowfall re-started in Kimberley, Moyie and other areas, which delivered roughly an additional 15 cm of snow overnight.

This additional heavy snowfall overnight mainly affected Cranbrook-Kimberley and the surrounding areas.  Area highways are currently compact covered, plowed and sanded throughout.  For the next several days, the Cranbrook crews will be working to remove the compact from highways as well as plowing and applying abrasive to side roads.

Elk Valley

Highways are mostly bare; please watch for compact or slippery sections.

Columbia Valley

Highways are mostly bare; watch for compact or slippery sections.

Yahk

Yahk area also saw heavy snowfall on Friday; road conditions are varied: compact-covered, some areas with bare wheel tracks or drying out. 34

For all areas, temperatures are forecasted to remain cold for the next several days, with clear skies. Our crews will be out around the clock, servicing side roads in priority sequence, and de-icing any remaining compact on the highways as prevailing weather allows.

Motorists should expect varied road conditions until well after the weather event ends. Please prepare for delays, adjust your speed & following distance to the conditions, and of course, leave plenty of room around working equipment.  34T

Please use caution, drive to the conditions, and prepare for delays caused by the weather. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for further updates.
