The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) will now accept smoke and carbon monoxide alarms at many of its Transfer Stations.

“We are constantly looking for ways to expand the variety of items that our residents are able to recycle, and our partnership with Product Care to offer this new option is one that we believe will be of great benefit to those in our region,” said RDEK General Manager of Engineering and Environmental Services, Kevin Paterson.

The drop-off locations include the Invermere, Cranbrook, Kimberley, Elkford, Fernie and Sparwood Transfer Stations.

Accepted products include smoke alarms, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, and combination smoke/CO alarms.

Things like thermostats, alarm keypads, physically damaged smoke alarms, building-wide smoke/CO detector units, and smoke detectors without an alarm function (typically installed in commercial buildings) will not be accepted.

Residents may drop-off up to 40 smoke or CO alarms at once.
