Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka took to Facebook this morning to plead for a campfire ban from provincial authorities.

“I am pleading with the BC Wildfire Service – Southeast Fire Centre to consider a campfire ban in this region immediately on behalf of myself, many concerned residents and those visitors who enjoy our special region,” Shypitka stated.

“What we have seen in the region in the past week is no rain and higher than forecasted temperatures reaching into the mid 30s. This has already led to an increase in wildfire activity. Action needs to be taken immediately to protect our precious outdoor and backcountry spaces, not to mention our communities,” he concluded.
