Multiple vehicle collision near Creston yields serious injuries

On May 21 at approximately 6:30 a.m., Creston RCMP, Fire Rescue and BC EHS attended to a multiple vehicle collision on Highway 3 approximately one km east of Canyon Lister Road. A westbound logging truck collided with a pickup truck in a corner which resulted in the load of logs spilling. The debris from the collision collided with an additional pickup that was travelling behind the first.

One vehicle was pushed over the bank of the highway shoulder and buried by the logs. Multiple people on scene were seriously injured and required advanced medical care.

As a result of the needs for emergency extraction, landing air support and the subsequent investigation, Highway 3 was closed in both directions for the majority of the day. All injured parties were transported by ground or air to receive the medical care they required.

“The Creston RCMP would like to express gratitude toward Creston Fire Rescue and assisting departments that worked tirelessly to conduct a very challenging extraction of injured people; as well to BC EHS and STARS for their excellent response in assisting these patients,” said S/Sgt. Brandon Buliziuk, Creston RCMP Detachment commander.

“Thanks as well to BC Highway Patrol and the Collision Reconstruction Team that attended to ensure the highest quality of investigation could be delivered. We would also like to acknowledge the staff and leadership at Yellowhead Road and Bridge (YRB), who offered staff and equipment to aid in the rescue of trapped parties where conventional rescue equipment may not have been adequate.

“We understand that this incident caused significant delays and disruption for the travelling public, and appreciate the patience of all who were affected by this closure.”

The cause of the collision remains under investigation and no further information will be released pending the results of said investigation.
