Nitro and Cat named KIJHL October Stars
The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) is pleased to announce its Stars of the Monthfor October.
Defence – Jackson Murphy – Kimberley Dynamiters
The 20-year-old from Calgary helped the Dynamiters win six of their eight October games. Murphy had a goal and seven assists and was +11 while playing an average of 19:21 a game. Murphy set up the 2-1 goal against the Revelstoke Grizzlies, winning 8-3. The 5-10, 174-pound blueliner assisted on all their goals in a 7-3 loss to Kelowna. He then assisted on their first two goals in a 6-4 win over Columbia Valley. Murphy scored the final goal in a 6-1 win over Fernie. He leads all KIJHL defencemen in points with 16 in 13 games.
Forward – Bryton Morrow – Princeton Posse
The Ardrossan, Alta., product averaged 2.25 points per game as he put up nine goals and 18 points in eight games. He played an average of 18:44 a game and was +15. Morrow helped the Posse win six of their eight October games and netted winners against the Osoyoos Coyotes and Merritt Centennials. His dominant October came from four multi-point games, including a hat-trick against Osoyoos, four assists against the Columbia Valley Rockies on Oct. 17 and a four-goal, five-point night against the Centennials. He is now second in the KIJHL with 26 points in 13 games.
Goalie – Dawson Groen – 100 Mile House Wranglers
The rookie from Winnipeg earned three wins with a .934 save percentage and a 2.56 goals against average. He earned Rookie of the Week honours for the period ending Oct. 12, thanks to a 41-save shutout performance leading the Wranglers past the Columbia Valley Rockies 1-0. The 6-1, 170-pound goalie was outstanding against the Kimberley Dynamiters on Oct. 17, saving 61 of 63 shots in a 3-2 shootout loss. Groen pushed his team past the Kamloops Storm in a 4-1 win with a 24-save performance and then closed out the month with a 38-save effort in a 5-3 win over the Williams Lake Mustangs. In 11 games, Groen is 4-3-3 with a .934 save percentage and a 2.64 goals against average.
Rookie – Owen Bambrick – Creston Valley Thunder Cats
The local product helped the Thunder Cats win six of their eight October games by scoring a goal and collecting nine assists for 10 points. He was +10 while playing an average of 19:50 a game. Bambrick assisted on the insurance goal in a 6-2 win over Sicamous on Oct. 4. He broke out against the Golden Rockets with a goal and five assists in a 7-4 win. On Oct. 31, Bambrick assisted on another insurance goal as they defeated the Nelson Leafs 7-1. Bambrick is second among KIJHL rookie defencemen in points with 13 in 13 games, which also ranks him fifth among all KIJHL blueliners.
