Non-partisan path needed to better wildlife management: MLA

MLA Tom Shypitka

If nothing is done to improve wildlife management in British Columbia, future generations will look back in “stunned dismay at how our province took what we had for granted,” warned Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka (BC United) today in the Legislature.

Shypitka rose in the House to speak about the importance of using science — not politics — to guide provincial decision-making about wildlife management.

He urged elected officials take a non-partisan approach and pass the second reading of his Private Members Bill ‘Wildlife Amendment Act No. 2 2023’ and ‘Wildlife Amendment Act No. 1 2023’ from Adam Olsen, MLA Saanich North and The Islands (Green Party), noting they would lay the foundation for an independent and sustainable funding model that would ensure the longevity of British Columbia’s wildlife population.

Shypitka proposed to the Legislature that all four parties adopt the two bills for second reading “and to have a legitimate discussion on how these bills can radically shift how we protect our most precious resource here in B.C. This would be a very good message to all British Columbians about how true collaboration in the peoples’ house works.

“We need some good news stories and this would be a great example. If this house works together, we can protect our wildlife and enhance our land,” he stated.
