ORC releases new guide for outdoor stewardship actions

The Outdoor Recreation Council of British Columbia (ORCBC) launched a new ‘Stewardship Inspiration Guide’ November 2 to empower outdoor recreation groups and residents to become stewards of the places they love to explore.

“More people are recreating outdoors than ever before, and with more boots on the ground, there is a growing need to help take care of the places where we live and play,” said Louise Pedersen, Executive Director of ORCBC.

“Removing invasive species, building a trail to save old-growth trees, cleaning up garbage and restoring riverside habitat to protect salmon are all examples of stewardship projects that outdoor groups and volunteers are already doing in B.C. We hope this new guide will help foster an even greater commitment to community-based action and sustainable recreation.”

Outdoor recreation groups and volunteers can play an essential role in maintaining, enhancing and protecting outdoor spaces in B.C. However, carrying out a meaningful and impactful project can be daunting. Through tangible ideas, inspiration and resources, the ORCBC hopes to inspire more volunteers and outdoor groups to come up with creative and collaborative ways of making the outdoors an even better place for everyone.

The “Stewardship Inspiration Guide” can be downloaded from the ORCBC website.

Upcoming webinar: How to make stewardship part of your organization’s mission.

ORCBC is also hosting a webinar where a panel of experts will show that stewardship is doable for any group. The webinar will define stewardship, show the value of projects for the public and the people doing the good work, help groups identify projects that fit with their expertise and highlight the support and funding that’s out there.

The panellists include:

  • Kim Reeves, President, 4 Wheel Drive Association of BC;
  • Jacqui Rasmussen, Executive Director, Lillooet Regional Invasive Species Society;
  • Robyn Hutchings, Stewardship Coordinator, BC Marine Trails;
  • Kevin Eskelin, regional recreation manager, Southern Interior East Region for Recreation Sites and Trails BC.

The webinar will begin with presentations from each panellist, followed by a live Q&A session with opportunities to ask questions. Register here.
