Peter Milobar has a long history of public service

By Tom Shypitka

Op-ed Commentary

As the BC Conservative leadership race continues, I believe it is important for the public to have clear background information about the candidates seeking to lead the party. One of those candidates is Peter Milobar, the current MLA for Kamloops Centre and the Opposition’s Shadow Minister of Finance.

I first worked alongside Peter when we were both newly elected MLAs in 2017. During that time, we collaborated on several significant files, including Environment and Climate Change, Finance, Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, and Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation.

Before entering provincial politics, Peter served three terms as Mayor of Kamloops and chaired the Thompson Regional Hospital District, giving him a long history of public service at both the municipal and provincial levels. Peter being a rural MLA certainly doesn’t hurt us here in the Kootenays.

I recently had the opportunity to reconnect with Peter during his visit to Cranbrook. In doing so, I was reminded of the qualities I observed throughout our eight years working closely together: his steady resolve, his attention to detail, and his consistent approach to public policy. These traits were evident when I first encouraged him to consider a leadership bid in 2020, and they remain part of his character today.

Some have questioned Peter’s political background because he previously served under the BC Liberal banner, as I did. In my experience, such comments overlook the realities of B.C.’s political landscape and the ways in which parties and coalitions have evolved over time. What I can speak to is Peter’s long-standing commitment to public service and his ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of people.

In my humble opinion, if it is change to government, you are looking for in a way that will unite British Columbians, then Peter Milobar is well suited to do that on day one as Premier. Peter is among the few candidates who currently hold a seat in the Legislative Assembly, which is a significant detail that many people may not realize.

As members and observers consider the direction of the BC Conservatives, I believe it is valuable for British Columbians to understand the depth of experience and history that candidates like Peter Milobar bring to the conversation.

I look forward to more candidates making their appearances to Cranbrook.
