Precipitation alert covers Elk Valley

Environment Canada has issued an alert warning of potential heavy rainfall for the southern Elk Valley including Fernie.

Rain, at times heavy, is expected with 40 to 60 mm today (Dec. 10) from now through tonight.

A moist Pacific frontal system is moving across the interior and is expected to produce heavy precipitation over parts of the Kootenays today.

Precipitation will fall mainly as rain, with wet snow possible over higher terrain this morning.

Heavy rain will continue through tonight, with total rainfall amounts of 40 to 60 mm expected by early Thursday morning.

Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Some travel delays are possible.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.

Elsewhere in the region it has snowed over night or is still snowing. Please drive to conditions.
