RDEK kicks off drive to recruit community firefighters

Step into a pivotal role in your community and make a lasting impact by joining the Columbia Valley or Elk Valley & South Country Rural Fire and Rescue Services.

The firefighter recruitment drive is on now, and the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is calling on residents to become a part of these crucial teams, safeguarding your community while gaining invaluable experiences.

Windermere Fire Department members responded to a RV Fire Sept. 26.

“No prior firefighting experience is required, as we provide comprehensive training and ongoing support throughout the learning process,” said Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Service Chief Drew Sinclair. “This opportunity offers personal benefits, including lifesaving first aid skills and improved leadership abilities, which can enhance both your personal growth and career path.”

The RDEK has fire departments in Jaffray, Baynes Lake, Elko, Hosmer, Fairmont Hot Springs, Windermere, Edgewater and Panorama Resort.

“Members of our department receive on-call compensation and eligibility for extended benefits, while experiencing the rewarding knowledge that you are helping your community in times of need,” said Elk Valley & South Country Rural Fire and Rescue Service Deputy Chief Ben Goertzen.

Interested applicants can visit the RDEK website to complete an application form or collect one at their local Fire Hall.

Residents from every background are urged to seize this opportunity to join dedicated teams that are foundational to the safety and well-being of our communities.

For additional information, you may contact the Elk Valley & South Country Rural Fire and Rescue Service at 250-429-3133 or the Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Service at 250-342-6214.
