Regional board pushes St. Mary lakeside development and park proposal forward
A 15 lot subdivision for the southeast corner of St. Mary Lake and adjacent 15 acre lakefront park turned the corner to the final stretch home August 5.
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors gave third reading to Bylaw No. 2324 Kimberley Rural Official Community Plan Bylaw Amendment and Bylaw No. 2325 Kimberley Rural Zoning & Floodplain Management Bylaw Amendment (St. Mary Valley/Tembec Industries).
When approved, the OCP and zoning bylaw amendments for the Kimberley rural area will re-designate land on the shore of St. Mary Lake to facilitate the creation of 15 rural residential parcels and a park.
A public hearing was held July 21 at Kimberley’s Centennial Hall, with six people speaking. Electoral Area E director Jane Walter and City of Kimberley Mayor and board director Jim Ogilvie heard concerns about boat sizes and restrictions, as well as about the riparian values of the lake.
The 15 acre park would be owned by the RDEK and administered through Electoral Area E regional parks and trails service.
Ogilvie and District of Elkford Mayor and board director Dean McKerracher voted against the third readings.
