Regional highways sneaky slippery

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting is reminding motorists and the traveling public that even though the region is experiencing warmer temperatures we can still expect slippery conditions on the roads as the ground under the road is still frozen after the previous week’s deep freeze.
DriveBC reports black ice occurring over a 110 km stretch of Highway 3 between Goatfel in the west to Wardner, with varying winter conditions elsewhere across the East Kootenay.

Mainroad advises motorists should always be prepared for icing and slippery conditions, particularly in the following situations:
after extended periods of extremely cold temperatures;
when the skies are clear or nearly clear and air temperatures fall below 4C;
cold air tends to pool in valleys, and in low and shaded areas;
when temperatures are near freezing and fog is in the vicinity, heavy icing is possible.

During these types of changing conditions, Mainroad crews will be out patrolling the service area to address any highway concerns, the company said in a public update.
Please slow down and drive to the conditions.
Before heading out, it is always wise to visit www.drivebc.ca for the latest road and weather updates.
