Regional Science Fair to inspire young minds April 12
The East Kootenay Regional Science Fair (EKRSF) is set to captivate and celebrate the brilliance of young scientific minds on April 12.
The event, which kicks off at 9 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m., promises a day filled with innovation, exploration, and excitement for students in grades 6-12. The theme of this year’s fair is Upcycle, whether that means waste reduction, cleaning up the environment, or designing products for longevity.
Hosted at College of The Rockies gymnasium, the East Kootenay Regional Science Fair provides a platform for budding scientists and engineers to showcase their research, experiments, discoveries, and innovations. Participants from schools across the region will present a diverse array of projects, spanning the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, environmental science, and more.
Students will have the opportunity to engage with judges, and fellow participants, gaining valuable feedback and insights that will contribute to their academic and personal growth.
Following the awards ceremony, there will be the highly anticipated Popsicle Stick Structure Challenge, at 3 p.m. This hands-on competition challenges participants to construct innovative and sturdy structures using only popsicle sticks and glue.
The creativity and engineering skills displayed during this contest promise to be a major attraction for participants and spectators alike. This year’s contest will be constructing a 5-section freestanding (self-supporting) support tower. This portion of the day is brought to you by Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC).
“I can’t wait to see the creative and impressive stuff that these young minds bring to the East Kootenay Regional Science Fair,” said Sam Farrell, EKRSF Board Member. “This event not only showcases the talent within our region but also inspires a love for science and discovery. We encourage everyone in the community to join us and support these aspiring scientists and engineers whose ingenuity may someday save our planet!”
The East Kootenay Regional Science Fair is made possible through the generous support of Science Fair Foundation BC, Youth Science Canada, College of the Rockies, School District No. 5, Canada-Wide Science Fair and Columbia Outdoor School.
The East Kootenay Regional Science Fair is an annual event that is a platform for young minds in Grades 6 to 12 to showcase their creativity and innovation. The fair encourages STEM education and fosters a love of science and technology.
