Regional Wildfire Round-up
There is some positive news this afternoon (August 16) about a fire that is not within the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) but has had a great impact on those in the area.
The Dogtooth FSR Fire (N21427), south of Golden within the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, is now classed as ‘being held’ and is not expected to grow further.
Here is the latest on fires within the RDEK with information from BC Wildfire Service:
N21610 – Ravenshead – 18 km E of Invermere
– The Evacuation ALERT for nine properties in the Palliser / Cross River area including Nipika Mountain Resort remains in effect.
– There are currently 87 firefighters and seven field staff along with 11 pieces of heavy equipment working on this fire consolidating containment lines along the western edge and conducting direct attack and mop-up on the eastern side. Crews are also working to secure the southeastern edge of the fire.
– Danger tree assessors and fallers are also doing critical work by supporting guard strengthening and ensuring crew access and safety.
– The Area Restriction remains in effect. Travel on the Kootenay-Settlers FSR (Ravenshead) and Palliser FSRs is NOT permitted within the area restriction.
N21014 – Mount Morro – (25 km east/northeast of Wasa)
– There are currently crews and field staff responding to this wildfire.
– Crews are carrying out direct attack on the northern edge of the fire above White-Lussier FSR and working with heavy equipment to build fire guard and facilitate crew access.
– The Area Restriction remains in effect.
N21284 and N11212 – Lost Dog Area (approx. 14 km west of Skookumchuck)
– The Area Restriction remains in effect for the Lost Dog Area and no public access is permitted within the restricted area.
– Officers continue to fly both fires regularly as remaining hot spots are in untraversable terrain and have plans in place should further containment action need to be taken.
N12216 – Approx. 12 km E/SE of Hosmer in Leach Creek area
– It is currently classified as BEING HELD at 0.009 hectares.
