Remembrance Day ceremonies in the EK
Friday, November 11, is Remembrance Day across Canada.
Each year public observations and ceremonies are held all across the East Kootenay. The following is information about where and when some of those events are taking place.
The Village of Canal Flats and the Royal Canadian Legion are holding a ceremony and wreath placement at 10:30 a.m. at the Civic Centre/Cenotaph.
Cranbrook
The annual Remembrance Day ceremony and parade will once again be held at Rotary Park. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. behind the East Kootenay Credit Union; the ceremony starts at 11 a.m. Following the service and ceremon, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 24 invites spectators and marchers to join them in the basement of the Heritage Inn Hotel & Convention Centre, after 1 p.m. the general public is invited to attend.
Edgewater
Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 199 is hosting a ceremony, including a parade to the Cenotaph and ceremony, followed by a community roast beef dinner at the legion. The parade begins at 3:45 p.m. and dinner at 5:30 p.m.
Elkford
Memorial Parade to the Cenotaph in front of the District of Elkford office on Michel Road, starting at 10:45 a.m. Cenotaph Ceremony begins at 11 am.
The Fernie Remembrance Day Ceremony begins at 10:55 a.m. at the Cenotaph at the Court House. An Ecumenical Service begins at the Legion Hall at 11:45 a.m.
Invermere
Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 71 is holding its annual procession from the Legion on 13th Street to Cenotaph Park, followed by a ceremony and laying of wreaths. The procession gets underway at 10:30 a.m.
Kimberley
Despite the efforts of some warped, disrespectful graffiti vandals who damaged the Kimberley cenotaph renovation project, delaying its Remembrance Day finish, the annual Remembrance Day ceremony will take place at the Cenotaph at 11 a.m., beginning first with a parade fall-in at the Elks Hall at 10:35 a.m.
Also: Kimberley Remembers exhibit – a salute to those from Kimberley who served in the First and Second World Wars. The Kimberley Heritage Museum exhibit features photographs, uniforms and various other ephemera related to Kimberley citizens during both World Wars. The museum is open on Nov.11 from 12 to 4 p.m., (just after the ceremonies at the cenotaph).
Sparwood
In Sparwood there is a 10 a.m. service at the Seniors Drop in Centre; a 10:45 a.m. Parade march to the Cenotaph; 11 a.m. Cenotaph Service.
