Scam text messages claiming to be from ICBC

Local residents are being targeted by fraudulent text messages falsely claiming to be from ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia).

These scam texts state that recipients have “unresolved traffic fines” and threaten service restrictions if payment is not made by a specific date.

The texts often come from international phone numbers — in some cases with a +27 (South Africa) country code — and contain awkward phrasing and scare tactics. They may also include links leading to fraudulent websites designed to steal personal or financial information.

Important facts to know:

  • ICBC does not notify customers of unpaid tickets by text message.
  • Official notices about traffic fines are delivered by mail or displayed when you log into your ICBC online account.
  • If you have unpaid fines, ICBC will restrict your ability to renew your driver’s licence or insurance until the ticket is cleared.
  • Police and municipalities issue tickets, not ICBC directly.

What to do if you receive one of these texts:

  • Do not click on any links or reply to the message.
  • Delete the message immediately.
  • If you’re concerned about outstanding tickets, check securely by logging in at www.icbc.com or by contacting ICBC directly at 1-800-950-1498.

Residents are urged to share this information with friends and family, especially seniors and those who may be more vulnerable to scams.
