Severe thunderstorm alert covers entire region

Environment Canada today issued another severe thunderstorm alert and a special weather statement warning of rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms expected by late this afternoon across the entire East Kootenay.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles,” Environment Canada reported.

Also, from today to Wednesday (June 14), rainfall amounts between 15 to 25 mm can be expected, with wind gusts up to 60 km/h.

Stronger wind gusts, and locally higher rainfall amounts possible in thunderstorms.

A cold front will sweep across British Columbia today. Rain and thunderstorms are expected to develop through the day, followed by gusty winds with the passage of the cold front.

An upper level disturbance develops tonight, bringing rain and a risk of thunderstorms to eastern regions of the province from the B.C. Peace River area to the Kootenays.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors.
