Severe thunderstorm alert for region
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm alert for the East Kootenay to go along with the smoky skies bulletin issued earlier in the day (August 4).
“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road,” Environment Canada stated.
“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
“Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.”
Additionally, multiple regions across southern B.C. are being impacted or are likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke over the next 24-48 hours.
“With increasing heat, dry conditions, and new fires due to dry lightning, more smoke is expected in the province’s southeast region. Expect smoke near new and active fires across the province. However, smoke levels may vary because of localized rain and changing wind conditions,” Environment Canada said.
