Severe thunderstorm alert issued for region
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for the entire East Kootenay, including Kootenay National Park.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” Environment Canada stated this morning (August 11).
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
Also, a special air quality statement remains in effect for the entire region as forest fire smoke remains thick in most areas
