Severe Thunderstorm Warning centred at Wasa area
Environment Canada this afternoon (July 28) issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for most of the East Kootenay, with the Wasa area highlighted in the alert.
The warning covers the Cranbrook/Kimberley and South Country areas of the Elk Valley, as well as the Columbia Valley.
Environment Canada meteorologists report they are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain.
“This thunderstorm is 10 km west of Wasa. It is moving to the northeast at 10 km/h approaching Highway 93 and Wasa Lake Provincial Park,” Environment Canada stated.
“Heavy rain may cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility. Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail.
Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are expected to produce damaging hail, wind or rain. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
