Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect
Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for the entire East Kootenay, excluding Kootenay National Park.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and heavy rain.
“Another day with a moist and unstable air mass over the BC Interior will trigger widespread thunderstorm activity today,” Environment Canada stated.
The main thunderstorm threat will be rainfall rates of up to 25 mm in one hour due to the slow motion of the storms. Wind gusts up to 90 km/h are also possible.
“Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Hail is also possible. Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!” Environment Canada advises.
