Shypitka urges NDP to help businesses suffering from crime

Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka rose today in the Legislature (pictured) and called on the NDP government to immediately address the rise in vandalism and property crime plaguing communities around British Columbia.

“Businesses are struggling as property crime has skyrocketed, and unfortunately, this is a government that seems unwilling to take the urgent action needed to get results,” said Shypitka, adding this situation is killing businesses and action is needed now and “the same, repeated strategies are simply not working.

“Improvements are needed and members of my community are tired of living in fear, they’re tired of damage to their properties and to businesses and the threat of break ins. At the same time, we also know this cannot be solved by policing alone.

“We need to take a closer look and examine the other gaps in our system that are contributing to the issue,” he stated, offering a quote from a Cranbrook business owner about the conditions currently being faced.

“There is so much to do, whether it is in the Kootenays or Vancouver Island or any other corner of this province.”
