Stay alert for freezing rain aftermath on roads
Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting this morning issued a travel alert warning the public about slick conditions being possible after freezing rain occurred last night.
“We will still encourage the public to travel with caution as the temperatures fluctuate. Crews are patrolling side roads and sanding/salting as needed,” Mainroad stated.
In terms of highway travel in the region, a lengthy closure of Highway 3 between Michel Creek Road and Carbon Creek Bridge, west of Sparwood, is now single-lane, alternating traffic, following a vehicle incident last night.
If you are heading west of Creston on Highway 3, be prepared for highway closures due to avalanche control work between West Avalanche Gate and East Avalanche Gate in Kootenay Pass.
DriveBC reports this work is expected to cease around 12:30 p.m. today (Jan. 23).
Motorists should use caution, drive to the conditions, and prepare for delays caused by the weather, Mainroad said.
Drivers should check www.drivebc.ca before heading out.
Mainroad’s 24-hour communications and dispatch office will pass on all your observations and concerns to our crews when contacted.
