The cost of a highly subsidized service

Letter to the Editor

Wow, the Liberal leader has vowed to increase the funding to CBC by $150 million immediately and eventually doubling the current $1.4 billion CBC receives. Oh yes and there was no mention of any cost reductions.

Let’s take a look at what you and I currently pay the CBC to operate. The total budget for 2024 is estimated at $1.4 billion (yikes I can’t even count that high). Within that budget $3.3 million goes to the top 45 executives, $10.4 million goes to 63 managers and $4.6 million goes to 518 other senior employees.

Now look at what you and I have to look forward to in our budgets. Our cost of living (groceries, fuel, housing) continues to increase dramatically. Our health care system is floundering under long wait times, chronic shortage of medical professionals and rising pharmaceutical costs. Municipal infrastructure costs to fix roads and replace aging sewer and water lines is rampant across the country. Long line ups at food banks and increased housing costs are noted everywhere.

Our taxes are out of control at all levels of government.

We now have a federal party leader who is willing to pour more of our taxpayer dollars into a highly subsidized service while expecting us to shoulder this added expense to all our current shrinking budgets. This leader and every one of us needs to give our heads a shake.

Douglas McLachlan,

Cranbrook
