Three wildfires burning in the East Kootenay
BC Wildfire Service is tending to one out-of-control fire in the East Kootenay today (July 13).
The fire, discovered July 9, is located in Yearling Creek, about 25 km east of Radium Hot Springs.
Believed ignited by lightning, the 10.7 hectares fire is receiving a modified response.
“During a modified response, a wildfire is managed using a combination of techniques with the goal to minimize costs and damage while maximizing ecological benefits from the fire. This response method is used when there is no immediate threat to values,” BC Wildfire Service explained.
There are two other fires in the region, both in the South Country, near Roosville and Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi ‘it and Grasmere and both are considered under control.
The Willie Phillips Creek fire, west of Grasmere, was discovered on July 10 and is about .8 ha.
And the Phillips Creek fire, west of Roosville, was discovered July 8 and is about .1 ha.
Both fires are believed to be human caused.
There are about 353 wildfires currently burning in the province.
