Thunderstorm and heavy rain alerts for region

Environment Canada has this morning (July 14) issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the East Kootenay and Creston area, as well as a Special Weather Statement warning of the potential for locally heavy rain.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” Environment Canada stated.

Additionally, there is potential for locally heavy rain as embedded thunderstorms could enhance local rainfall amounts. Localized flooding is possible as well as the increased risk of landslides and sudden reduction of visibility in heavy rain.

“Heavy rain could develop along a trough passing through southeast interior B.C. today. Current weather model guidance is indicating locally high rainfall amounts. However, there remains some uncertainty as to the exact locations of the heavy rain band,” Environment Canada forecasted.

The warnings are for today through tonight.

When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain.
