Time for experienced leadership in an unprecedented election
Letter to the Editor
As the incumbent MLA for Kootenay Rockies, I feel it’s important to address some of the uncertainty many voters may be experiencing in this upcoming election.
First and foremost, I was always going to seek re-election, regardless of the circumstances. However, the collapse of the B.C. United party, without forewarning to myself or my colleagues, has placed many of us in an unprecedented situation — one that has never been seen before in Canadian political history. With the implosion of our party just before an election, we, who have faithfully represented our constituents, suddenly find ourselves without a party banner.
For me, running as an independent isn’t the product of ideology, but rather a reflection of the fact that I did not leave the party — the party left me. My priority has always been, and continues to be, serving the people of the Kootenay Rockies.
Over the last eight years, I’ve built strong relationships with stakeholders, First Nations communities, non-profits, and everyday residents. I’m deeply invested in our community, and I believe my record shows that I’ve delivered exceptional service regardless of political affiliation.
Another core focus of mine has always been to challenge the current NDP government. With every year that passes, the need to remove them becomes more apparent, as their policies continue to harm our province.
Running as an independent presents three possible outcomes in this election:
- The Conservatives win a majority government. In this scenario, I would align with them if it makes sense for the people of our riding, ensuring our region is well-represented in any new government.
- The NDP win a majority. This, to me, is the worst-case scenario. I’ve spent two terms in opposition, and I know firsthand how difficult it can be to secure support for your constituents from the government in power. You need an MLA with experience and a proven track record to deliver results in opposition, and that’s what I bring to the table.
- No party wins a majority. This is the best-case scenario for our region. As an independent, I would be in a position to hold the balance of power, giving the Kootenay Rockies unprecedented leverage in provincial politics.
In these uncertain times, my commitment to representing our riding hasn’t wavered. We’ve seen how well my team and I have served this community — our performance in the last election gave us the largest margin of victory for a centre-right party in B.C. This is proof of the trust and appreciation from the people of this region.
I know there are other candidates running, but the fact remains: this election is unlike any we’ve seen before. We need certainty and strong, experienced leadership to navigate these uncharted waters. I am dedicated to continuing the fight for our region, and I believe my track record speaks for itself.
In closing, I want to emphasize that I am deeply rooted in this community — born and raised in Cranbrook, with five generations of my family in the Elk Valley. I have skin in the game, and I will always fight for what’s best for this beautiful region.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions.
Tom Shypitka,
Independent Candidate for Kootenay-Rockies
