Tiring time for volunteers in wetlands clean up

Volunteers collected over 100 decaying tires on the shore of Wilmer wetlands section of the Columbia River Wetlands during another cleanup organized by Wildsight on the weekend of Oct. 22/23.

Although there have been a number of volunteer cleanups of the wetlands and bench lands near Wilmer over the years, there is still a fair amount of detritus kicking around, and damage by dirt bikers, quadders, four wheelers, etc. continues unabated (but that’s a whole other topic).

Last weekend we had another successful turnout of Wildsight volunteers who scoured the gullies above the water and dragged/rolled the most accessible tires to the water’s edge. Our hope is that the same contractors who initiated the rehabilitation of the foreshore last winter will be back to complete their work, in which case they’ll be able to properly evacuate and dispose of these tires. If not, we’ve got a fun plan in place for another citizen event that will involve skidding the tires over the ice to be picked up in springtime at an access point below Wilmer by pickup truck.
