Weather advisory for south of region

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the southern part of the East Kootenay, spanning from Elk Valley to Kimberley/Cranbrook and west to Kitchener.

Snowfall with total amounts of 10 to 15 cm is expected along Highway 3 from Kitchener to the Elk Valley from now to midnight.

“An upper disturbance is making its way through southern B.C. today. It is bringing pockets of heavy convective flurries across the region. The conditions are expected to improve after midnight,” Environment Canada reported.

Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for taillights ahead and be prepared to stop.

Additionally, there is a winter storm warning for Kootenay Pass with 25 to 30 cm of snow accumulation expected up to midnight.

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting reports crews are currently out responding to the snowfall. Please leave a safe travelling distance, and ensure your lights are turned on when driving as visibility is limited in areas.

Motorists should use caution, drive to the conditions, and prepare for delays caused by the weather. Drivers should check www.drivebc.ca before heading out.
