Wildsight hiring for Youth Climate Corps

Submitted by Wildsight

Wildsight’s Youth Climate Corps (YCC) is hiring young adults interested in local solutions to the global climate emergency.

Starting this May, Kimberley/Cranbrook Climate Action Technicians will work closely with local partners engaged in community climate action projects such as wildfire resilience, wetland enhancement, food recovery and sustainability, and community engagement. No prior experience or education is required.

Wildsight ran its first Kimberley/Cranbrook Youth Climate Corps in 2021, building on that success in 2022 with a second team and more varied projects.

“As we continue to build partnerships with local organizations already doing amazing work, our crews have more opportunities to grow their own skill sets, while supporting organizations committed to climate action within our region,” reported Tim Chapman, YCC Kimberley/Cranbrook coordinator.

“This year, we have another great lineup of projects planned for our crews to really lean in and experience first-hand what we can do to combat climate change.”

Past crew members have found the program meaningful and affirming.

“The experience I gained during the season with YCC was invaluable in terms of getting hands-on experience, building connections in the community, and using teamwork and leadership to problem solve in the field,” reflected 2022 participant Kimberley Crockett.

“The projects we worked on were so diverse, and it was very exciting to be involved in them.”

The 2023 season runs from May 1–August 25, with a potential for extension into the fall. Crew members will receive employment and core employability skills training with Kootenay Employment Services’ Ignite program, as well as a $500 completion bonus.

As climate change places increasing pressure on our global, regional and local ecosystems and communities, the need to respond with meaningful action could not be more pressing. Harnessing the energy and ambition of young adults, the Youth Climate Corps empowers young adults to inspire and implement solutions to the climate crisis through employment, training and leadership development.
