Winnipeg landfill standoff is a Canadian issue
Letter to the Editor
The issue of recovering the remains of four Indigenous women in the Prairie Green landfill in Winnipeg is not a Winnipeg issue. It is not a Manitoba issue. It is a Canadian issue.
What if the missing women were white, or male? It is unlikely there would have been the delay in announcing the probability of their bodies being in a dump. There would not have been the litany of excuses as to why a search would/could/should not be made. There would not be the deafening silence from the people of Canada.
Incidents like this become part of the history of Canada, along with dispossession, residential schools, reservations and racism.
Think of the search for the missing commercial sub with its five passengers. Everything was done by several state governments to find the submersible and its occupants. Cost was never an issue. Instead, the focus was on closure for the relatives and friends of the missing persons, as well as discovering the reasons for the accident.
We can put people in space. Why cannot we search a landfill?
