Winter storm warning for Elk Valley
Environment Canada January 6 issued another winter storm warning for the Elk Valley, while other areas of the region are also going to receive further healthy dollops of snow.
Hazardous winter conditions are expected in the Elk Valley and Kootenay Lake areas of the Kootenays between this afternoon and Friday evening. Snowfall amounts between 15 and 25 cm for the Elk Valley, except 20 to 35 cm near Fernie and Morrissey, Environment Canada noted.
“An intense Pacific frontal system is moving through the interior B.C. Snow will rapidly intensify this evening and continue through Friday before tapering off to flurries early Friday evening. Rapidly accumulating snow may affect the Friday morning commute,” Environment Canada stated.
Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting also issued a weather advisory – snowfall warning this afternoon and provided a regional breakdown.
Elk Valley:
Winter storm warning is in effect for the Elk Valley with accumulations of 35 cm expected for the Fernie and Morrissey area. Snowfall is to begin tonight and continue into Friday, tapering off Saturday.
Cranbrook/Kimberley area:
Snowfall is forecast to begin tonight and continue into Friday. Snowfall accumulation is forecast to be between 15 – 20 cm for the Yahk area and five – 10 cm for the Cranbrook/Kimberley area.
Columbia Valley:
Light flurries are forecast to begin on Thursday and continue into Friday evening with accumulations of up to five cm for the Invermere area.
In Panorama, Heavy snowfall is expected to begin on Thursday and continue into Friday, with accumulations expected of up to 15 cm.
Mainroad maintenance crews will be continuously plowing and applying winter abrasive until the roadways are returned to the acceptable standard.
