Winter Storm Warning for Kootenay Pass
Environment Canada this afternoon (March 12) issued a Winter Storm Warning for Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.
Hazardous winter conditions are expected starting this evening to early Friday morning (March 14).
“A low pressure system moving across the southeastern B.C. will bring significant snowfall to Kootenay Pass. A band of heavy snow will begin this evening and will continue through Thursday bringing total snowfall accumulation of 20 to 30 cm by Friday morning,” Environment Canada stated.
Five to 10 cm of snow is also anticipated for the Elk Valley on Thursday (March 13).
Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations.
Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.
The site shiftintowinter.ca reminds drivers to know before you go. Adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains. Road conditions are available at drivebc.ca.
