Winter system coming our way

A winter system is expected to hit all areas of the East Kootenay starting Oct. 31/Nov. 1.

Accumulations of 15 to 20 cm over the following four days are possible in some areas with temperatures dropping to near -20C in parts of the Elk Valley and -15C elsewhere in the region, Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting reported this morning (Oct. 30).

The system should be clear by Sunday but cold temperatures are expected to linger.

“Mainroad crews are now on a 24-hour winter shift and will be patrolling, plowing and treating roads as conditions dictate.  Motorists should expect winter driving conditions and be prepared for the first blast of winter with good winter tires, winter wiper blades and plenty of winter washer fluid. Watch for wildlife, leave extra time to get to your destination and check Drive BC before heading out on the highway. Watch for plows and spreader equipment working,” Mainroad stated.

Environment Canada has not issued any weather alerts but confirms that snow is likely headed our way between Nov. 1 and 5.
