Wintery, slippery conditions prevail: Mainroad

Mainroad East Kootenay is this afternoon reporting that main highways in the region have compact snow and slippery sections.
“Side roads are snow covered. Liquid anti icing operations will be carried out over the weekend as temperatures allow, colder areas will be patrolled and sanded as required. Side roads are being cleaned up on an ongoing basis,” Mainroad noted in public a road and weather update.
There is a chance of isolated flurries in all locations over the weekend with accumulations up to five centimetres. Temperatures will rise slightly over the next 48 hours but will remain in the -10C or colder range in the Columbia and Elk Valley areas, Mainroad stated.

Monday morning (Dec. 12) is forecasted to see temperatures drop again into the -20C range by midweek.
Gusty winds are forecast in all areas, which combined with powder snow on trees and roadsides can create visibility problems to develop very rapidly. Winter driving conditions prevail throughout the district and motorists should prepare and drive accordingly.
Please watch for highways maintenance equipment working throughout the district.
