Work underway to restore power after lightning strike
BC Hydro is currently working to restore power to East Kootenay customers impacted after a lightning strike last night.
BC Hydro reported lightning struck a transmission structure, breaking a crossarm and resulting in a portion of line coming down near Canal Flats along the main transmission line that runs between Cranbrook and Invermere.
“It resulted in an outage to several thousand customers in the area. We were able to transfer some of those customers onto a secondary transmission line in the area, restoring power to about 10,000 customers,” a BC Hydro spokesperson said.
“We are working as quickly as we can to make repairs, and we are hoping to have power restored by 3:30 p.m. today.
“For customers with power, we ask you to temporarily conserve electricity so we can provide power to as many customers as possible while repairs take place. For example, where possible, reduce air conditioning (adjusting temperature settings or turning off unnecessary portable units), use of major appliances, like clothes dryers and ovens, and lighting.
“There may be some customers who experience temporary outages as we complete repair work. Where possible, we are prioritizing powering essential services.
“We want to thank you for your patience as our crews work to repair the damaged transmission line. Up-to-date information on restoration times can be found at bchydro.com/outages,” BC Hydro outlined.
