$24 million project will reduce outages
Electricians made repairs to Fernie Substation after a full station outage took out power to Fernie and area customers on April 29. During the outage, crews worked quickly and safely, following switching protocols, and manually transferred the supply to the second transformer in the substation.
In the week following the outage, BC Hydro completed a thorough investigation and learned that a faulty relay device caused the outage. Repairs were completed on Friday, May 13 and both transformers are again in service.
BC Hydro’s $24 million Fernie Substation Upgrade project, which will begin this fall and be complete by spring 2018, will see many improvements including automated switching and result in fewer outages such as these to Fernie and area.
