Annual Raft Race raises money for Elk River Alliance
Fernie’s annual raft race organized by Canyon Raft was a resounding splash, with plenty of fun costumes and fierce paddling. Every year, all proceeds from this event are donated to the Elk River Alliance, and this year the event raised $2,880!
The event was held on Wednesday, June 19, and saw 144 participants. Canyon Raft Company has been organizing the raft race since 1997, fostering Fernie’s sense of community and adventure. Tunnel 49 was an instrumental help for this event, by adding their guides, rafts, and gear.
Teams gathered at the boat launch for the race rundown and were bused to the Dicken Road put-in. After a gentle float down the river, the race began. Paddlers worked hard to race between the Leo T. Nimsick bridge and the West Fernie Bridge, taking out at the Dogwood park boat launch.
The night ended off with some drinks, food, and prizes at the Bridge Bistro. Prizes were awarded for First Place (won by Summit Works), Family Raft (Sarah, Gabe and Family), Royal Sportsman (the Black Paddles), and two best costume awards (Westslope Cutthroat Pirates and the Graduates).
“The Raft Race is a great way to get the people out enjoying the river and a chance for the Raft Guides to give back to the community,” said Blair Craig, co-owner of Canyon Raft Company.
The money raised goes directly towards the Elk River Alliance’s Elk River Discovery Camp, which gets kids outside to learn about and experience the local watershed first-hand.
“We look forward to the raft race every year!” ERA Executive Director Chad Hughes said, “it’s a fun way to start the season, it gets people out on the river, and the community support really helps keep our educational programs.”
The Elk River Alliance and Canyon Raft Company thanks all of the organizers, participants, and companies that donated prizes to make this year’s raft race a success.
