Critical need for firefighters in Jaffray

Firefighter recruitment events in Jaffray this week

Members of the Jaffray Fire Department will be putting on a community dinner and providing valuable training this week as the Regional District of East Kootenay’s (RDEK) Firefighter Recruitment drive continues.

“We are holding a community dinner and information night on Thursday featuring presentations by some of our local firefighters and other agencies,” said Fire Chief Dave Boreen. “Then on Sunday, we are going to have a community training event where we will be providing general information on the importance of fire extinguishers and then those in attendance will have a hands-on opportunity to use an extinguisher to put out a fire. We will also be doing adult CPR training and will have station tours and other demonstrations.”

Both events are part of the ongoing Firefighter Recruitment Drive; however, Boreen said the events are not just for those interested in becoming firefighters with the department.

“Having a fire extinguisher in your home and knowing how to use it is a critical part of any home safety plan and we hope to see as many people as possible come out for this free learning opportunity. Everyone is welcome,” he said

The Jaffray Fire Department is in critical need of firefighters and Boreen is appealing to the community to attend the upcoming events to learn more about the department’s role in the community and what’s involved in becoming a part of the team.

If people are afraid of ladders or concerned about fighting fires, they can be trained to run pumps or look after the important paperwork that is required to keep the hall going. There truly is a job for everyone,” he said.

No experience is necessary to become a paid-on-call firefighter with the Jaffray Fire Department and all training is provided free of charge.
