Elderly missing man rescued
On May 31 at 9:04 p.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP received a report of a missing person from Sparwood.
The initial information received noted the 85-year-old man was supposed to meet a friend for dinner in town, but he did not show up, so they grew concerned and contacted police.
The man was supposed to go to a remote cabin in the local area and then return in time for the dinner. Elk Valley RCMP front-loaded the investigation and involved RCMP resources from Crowsnest Pass and completed home checks, financial checks and cellphone pings in an attempt to locate the man’s position as it was unknown where he was going, but this was not successful.
On June 1 at 11:03 a.m., Police received a report from two witnesses who had located the missing person’s truck near Phillips Peak along Weigert Creek FSR. The man’s truck had reportedly gotten stuck, and he had left the vehicle on foot but suffered an ankle injury in due course and so spent the evening outside in somewhat difficult conditions.
RCMP activated Elkford and Sparwood Search and Rescue and, along with BC Ambulance, attended the location. Search and Rescue were able to quickly locate the elderly man and he was transported to hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
“Elk Valley Regional RCMP wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to our SAR volunteers who donate their time helping with these events in our communities,” said S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen, Elk Valley RCMP Detachment commander.
“Police would like to remind everyone headed out in the back country to let someone know what your travel plans and destinations are, to carry appropriate equipment for self-care (including clothing, food and water) and to carry a device capable of communicating with your point of contact or emergency services while on your “off the grid” journey.”
