Elk River crossing erosion mitigation project

As part of a planned project that will help ensure the continued safe and reliable delivery of natural gas in the Sparwood area, FortisBC will be adding ground cover over a gas line that crosses the Elk River in Sparwood.

The work will be done just north of the CP Rail Bridge upstream of the Highway 43 Bridge and is beside Teck’s Elkview Mine operations.

The construction involves carefully placing natural materials such as rocks, boulders and soil over the gas line to protect it. When complete, there will be a smooth, uniform bump well below the water line so river can be used as it was previously. Work is scheduled to begin Monday, August 8 and proceed for six to eight weeks. This timing is scheduled to minimize possible impacts to fish in the Elk River.

During construction there will be machinery working in and alongside the Elk River.

FortisBC realizes this is a popular area for recreational river users. We are asking recreational users to avoid the area if possible so that work can be completed as quickly and safely as possible, and if users are in the area, to watch for and follow the instructions on the construction signage.

If you would like to speak directly with someone at FortisBC about the project, I can be contacted by telephone 250.231.0176 or email at [email protected]
