Elk Lakes Provincial Park to get $19k for cabin renos

The Alpine Club of Canada will be receiving $19,000 in Community Legacy Funding to help renovate cabins in Elk Lake Provincial Park, north of Elkford, to increase capacity.
In total, BC Parks is providing $450,000 in matching funds for community groups around the province that will create improvements to 27 provincial parks, helping mark BC Parks’ 100th anniversary.

To be eligible for funding, community groups were required to contribute to the project either with financial or in-kind contributions. Groups receiving funding through the program are contributing a total of nearly $470,000 in cash and in-kind support for a total project value of nearly $920,000.
The Community Legacy Program provides up to $20,000 per project for work such as trail enhancements, improvements that support recreational activities or conservation of the park's ecology or cultural history.
"We asked communities to tell us what they would most like to see in their local parks - and today we're providing funding through the Community Legacy Fund to make those improvements possible,” said Environment Minister Terry Lake in a July 8 press release.

"Community Legacy funding looks to the future and the improvements we will continue to make - and it celebrates the past 100 years by recognizing the key role community groups have played in making our provincial parks the treasures they are today,” he said.
B.C. has the second largest park system in Canada - second only to the national park system. A total of 13.6 per cent of the province is set aside as parks and protected areas.
