Elkford Council News

The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the May 14 District of Elkford council meeting.

SYS.tem (Seeing Youth Succeed. Teen Elkford Motivation) showed off new Glass Work Logo Project

The group proudly unveiled the project in its first official appearance to council. Ten members of the SYS.tem Youth Action Network worked with local artist Katherine Russell to create the work of art. The piece will be hung at the Elkford Community Conference Centre for all to admire and enjoy!

Bearspaw Contracting Community First Society hosting third annual Charity Golf Tournament

The Society shared exciting details with council about the upcoming third Annual Charity Golf Tournament. This year’s proceeds will be donated to Elk Valley Safe Homes and other miscellaneous charities in the Elk Valley. The much-anticipated event kick-off (live entertainment, silent auction and celebrity meet and greet) will take place in Elkford on June 7, and the Celebrity Golf Tournament will take place in Fernie on June 8. Council approved in-kind use of Teck Hall at the Elkford Community Conference Centre for the kick-off event.

Devonian Concession Building getting a facelift

Thanks in part to grant funding, construction on the facility (pictured) will start after Wildcat Days. You may not recognize it when it is done, but you can look forward to new accessible family washrooms, an extended roof that will offer a shady, protected picnic area and new siding that matches other district facilities. It’s not just the exterior getting a makeover; the interior will have new floors, walls and fixtures.

Donation made to Elkford Secondary School Project Respect workshops

Council approved a donation of $300 toward the workshops, which will aim to create awareness and dialogue around the issue of sexualized violence. Participants will explore their role in creating a safer community by learning applicable tools and techniques for critical thinking and prevention around the sexual violence issues that students face.

Elkford to be represented at the Elk Valley Royal Canadian Air Cadets’ annual Ceremonial Review

A member of council will attend the event, which will showcase the cadets’ training year and skills.

Two new dehumidifiers to be installed at the arena and curling rink

Keeping in mind the current needs of recreational facilities and users, and considering the district’s commitment to energy and cost efficiency, council approved the replacement of the current aging dehumidifiers.

Council Procedure Amendment Bylaw No. 805, 2018 Adopted

The Council Procedure Bylaw defines the general procedures that are followed by council and council committees in conducting business.

Why did it need to be amended? As a result of the upcoming 2018 local government election, there have been recent changes to the Community Charter and BC Election Act that resulted in the need to amend the bylaw. The amendments include minor changes that meet legislative requirements and better reflect Elkford’s council meeting proceedings.

Next meeting of council

Monday, May 28 at 6 p.m. in council chambers at 816 Michel Road.
