No injuries in derailment near Elkford
On January 13, at approximately 8:51 a.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP, at the request of CPKC Police, attended to the 1500 block of Fording River Road near Elkford for a report of a train derailment.
Upon arrival, RCMP noted approximately 15-20 train cars carrying coal on their side off the rails and piled up mostly together, with approximately two to three feet of coal on the road itself.
There were thankfully no injuries reported, but the roadway was fully blocked by the coal.
“As the primary investigation is being completed by the CPKC Police, Elk Valley RCMP ensured our partners with Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting and Ministry of Transportation and Transit as well as community stakeholders were aware of the derailment, and then remained on scene for traffic control purposes until investigators from CPKC Police arrived on scene,” reported S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen, Elk Valley RCMP Detachment commander.
Any further investigative updates or other questions regarding the investigation can be directed to CKPC Police.
