Avalanche City is ready to roll

Avalanche City Roller Derby is thrilled to announce its return to the track and the community! Known for its energy, grit, and camaraderie, the team is ready to lace up their skates and bring the excitement of roller derby back to Fernie.

“Over the last six months, we’ve been hosting these fantastic Learn-to-Skate programs, and we’ve got a great group of beginner skaters starting to form,” stated Avalanche City skater BreakAdawn. “If you’ve ever thought about trying roller derby, now is the time!”

To kick off this next chapter, the team is excited to roll out their next offerings: the “Intro to Derby” and “Derby 2.0” programs, launching on February 6.

These four-week programs are open to female-identifying community members of all body types, ages 18-50+, with no prior experience required.

Roller derby is an empowering, high-energy sport that promotes fitness, teamwork, and self-expression.

For Avalanche City, it’s also about forging lasting friendships and building a supportive community. With the “Intro to Derby” program, the team hopes to spark interest in the sport and recruit new members to join their ranks.

Hosted at Max Turyk Community Centre, this four-week program is the perfect opportunity for anyone curious about roller derby. Whether a complete beginner or someone looking to refresh your skills, the experienced coaches and team members will guide you every step of the way.

Rideshare options are available from Sparwood, Cranbrook, and Kimberley. Quad skates and protective equipment are included—just a helmet is required. Pre-registration is required.

“Roller derby is more than just a sport; it’s a community,” said Avalanche City skater Wrex. “You’re not too old, too big, too small, or too unbalanced. We love helping new skaters build confidence, push their limits, laugh, learn, and play.”
