Due to intense rains and snow melt the City of Fernie’s wastewater treatment system is over capacity and not functioning properly.

Crews are making every effort to protect critical components of the system from catastrophic failure and prevent backup of the system into homes and businesses.

We are asking all residents and businesses to conserve water to help reduce pressure on the system.

Wastewater is currently being discharged to the river at two locations, and we are coordinating directly with Provincial Ministries on the response and determining what additional supports can be provided. Please be mindful of crews and avoid the river.
