Fernie Book Bike Project launched
Literacy on wheels
Fernie, British Columbia, is a small but vibrant and tenacious mountain community in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. We love to be active, we love to be social, we love to be outdoors!
The Fernie Heritage Library is housed in a beautiful historic building, and enjoys being in the hub of downtown. At times, patrons cannot come to us. At times we want to venture out where the stories are! And since we haven’t worked out how to move our mountains or buildings, we want to invest in a Library Book Bike in order to bring words, stories, music, and movies to those who aren’t able to come to us.
The Fernie Book Bike Project would like to bring books to seniors and shut-ins. We also would like to be a mobile unit to exchange paperbacks for travelers, and a little event that arrives at the cul de sac with a few new stories for kids on summer vacation.
The Fernie Book Bike will have a regular route around Fernie where books can be signed out, swapped and enjoyed. The Book Bike will be present for our weekly downtown Summer Socials and Mountain Markets as well as our Summer Music festivals. We dream of story times in the gazebo and teen book clubs by the Elk River, mobile wireless hot spot, but first…we need a bike!
The bike we are raising money for is a Haley Book Bike and is built for just what we want! See details here.
The bike, including assembly and shipping costs $3,000 so an indiegogo fundraising project has been launched.
We will issue a tax receipt for any donations over $25 from the Friends of the Fernie Heritage Library. Please include your email when donating online in order for us to email you a receipt.
