Fernie Pride fundraising film screening and panel discussion

Fernie Pride Society is pleased to work with The Arts Station, Park Place Lodge, and Fernie Alpine Resort to bring People Like Us to Fernie on Friday, December 22, at 7 p.m.

In People Like Us, filmmaker and photographer, Ryan Collins explores the implications of being a gay man in Revelstoke, while seeking to frame a larger picture of queer life in a mountain small-town. People Like Us follows Ryan as he connects with the queer community of Revelstoke, seeking their opinions, stories and relationships with mountain culture and the outdoor snow sports industry, in the hope of building perspective into what it is like to be queer in a rural setting.

After moving to Revelstoke in 2020 to work in the mountain sports industry, Ryan felt welcomed, building a strong friend group and work opportunities. Despite this warm reception, he started to feel that there was something missing, a connection with people like him.

As Ryan actively reaches out to members of the local queer community he begins to build a better understanding of the shared queer experience. In doing so People Like Us will celebrate the existence of queer folks in non-urban settings, and show that healthy queer communities can flourish in small towns.

This fundraising film screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Ryan, skiers Jas Clancy and Janet Wong, Fernie local Teresa Caufield, and facilitated by Patty Vadnais.

Tickets are only $10 and include automatic entry for some amazing raffle prizes! Tickets available at the door from 6:30pm onwards or they are able to be purchased in advance at www.ferniepride.ca.

The opportunity to screen this reflective and relevant film has been generously supported by the People Like Us filmmakers and sponsors. We thank them for this fundraising opportunity!

Since 2016, Fernie Pride Society has worked to create and connect the 2SLGBTQ+ community in the Elk Valley and South Country. They provide resources, referrals, education, special events and more for queer people and allies of all ages.
