Fernie roller derby teams in recruitment mode

The Fernie Roller Derby League is heading into another season of recruitment and competition.

To start events rolling, both the Avalanche City bombsQUAD and Avalanche City Roller Derby are hosting free and fun information sessions.

The sessions will be held on Tuesday, September 18 at 6 p.m. for the bombsQUAD and 7 p.m. for the adult team.

The Junior team welcomes all genders between ages 6 and 17, and the adult team welcomes people aged 18+ that are female identifying. Both teams would also love to connect with you if you’re interested in officiating, either in a skating or non-skating role!

The two teams encourage anyone who is interested in the sport to try it out before signing up for the season. There will be equipment available to borrow for the information session, which is a great way to try the sport without committing fully and buying your own equipment! A brand new starter equipment package costs approximately $300 – which includes beginner skates, protective pads, mouth guard and helmet. The league also has a variety of used equipment for sale as current team members update their own equipment.

Since Fernie Roller Derby’s establishment in 2011, the bombsQUAD has gone from strength-to-strength, playing in home and away games.

The Avalanche City Roller Derby team has also gained strength, becoming a ranked team within the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), where they currently sit at #177 internationally and #14 in Canada according to the ranking calculator Flat Track Stats.

The league’s aim is to maintain its standard of competition, inclusivity, teamwork and integrity.

Avalanche City Roller Derby and the bombsQUAD will enter their competitive seasons in January 2019, competing through to July 2019.
